Before light bulbs were invented, people used candles and oil burning lamps to see in the dark. Thomas Edison invented light bulbs in 1879. Light bulbs are made out of glass, a metal conductor (the base), and a wire called a filament. The glass bulb protects the filament, which gets hot and glows when the light is switched on. By switching the light on, you are providing the light bulb with electricity which is required to produce the light and heat. If a light bulb breaks, be sure to ask an adult to clean up as the glass bulb pieces could be sharp and it may be hot to touch.
